Description
Effective and efficient teaching procedures for children with autism have increasingly gained attention as the number of individuals diagnosed with autism continues to rise. Current research suggests that methods based in applied behavior analysis are the most efficacious treatments available. Several methods subscribe to the theoretical foundation of behavior analysis, but research on differences between these methods has been limited. This study assessed the efficiency of teaching with two current treatment methods, the UCLA model and Natural Environment Training. Each teaching method was evaluated for its effects on acquisition, generalization and retention of skills. Additionally, fluency of skills was assessed to determine the effects of both methods on producing fluency. Four children on the autism spectrum served as participants. Results suggest that participants acquired skills more efficiently in a natural environment paradigm. Generalization results did not show major differences between the two conditions. Neither condition produced initial fluency or retention of skills. The addition of fluency training indicated that fluency was attainable; however, it may need to be specifically planned and was not a byproduct of meeting accuracy criterion alone. Limitations and future directions are discussed.
